Common Dental Emergencies

Severe tooth pain requires immediate evaluation to determine the cause. Pain may indicate decay, infection, cracked tooth, or other issues. We provide immediate pain relief and treatment to address the underlying problem.

Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth can be treated with bonding, fillings, crowns, or veneers depending on severity. We stabilize the tooth and discuss restoration options. Knocked-out teeth are time-sensitive emergencies. If your tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown (not the root), keep it moist in milk or saliva, and contact us immediately. In some cases, we can re-implant the tooth if brought to us quickly.

Lost fillings or crowns leave the underlying tooth exposed and vulnerable. We provide temporary or permanent solutions to protect the tooth. Oral injuries including lacerations and abscesses require professional evaluation and treatment to prevent infection and complications.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Contact us immediately if you experience a dental emergency. Call (916) 448-5458 during business hours. Our team will fit you in quickly and provide the care you need. For severe pain, over-the-counter pain medication may provide temporary relief while you await your appointment.

For knocked-out teeth, time is critical. Handle the tooth carefully by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently if necessary, but don't scrub it. Place the tooth in milk, saliva, or a saline solution to keep it moist. Never place it in water or dry storage. Get to our office as quickly as possible. Reimplantation success decreases significantly after 30 minutes, so seek immediate care.

For broken teeth, save any fragments you can and bring them with you. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply cold compress to the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling. Avoid chewing on the damaged tooth. For infections or abscesses, rinse with salt water and take over-the-counter pain medication until you can reach us. Infections can be serious, so seek urgent care if you develop fever, facial swelling, or difficulty swallowing.
