STAINED OR YELLOW TEETH

The shade you remember is still under there.

Stained or yellow teeth in Sacramento? KöR whitening reaches stains strips cannot, including tetracycline. Mercado Dental Studio, (916) 448-5458.

Signs this page is for you

This page is for you if any of this sounds familiar:

  • Your teeth look duller in photos than they feel in the mirror
  • Coffee, tea, or red wine have left a yellow or brown cast
  • Whitening strips helped a little, then stopped helping
  • Gray or banded discoloration that never responded to whitening
  • One tooth is darker than its neighbors

WHY TEETH DARKEN, AND WHAT ACTUALLY REVERSES IT

Matching the treatment to the stain is the whole game.

Tooth color changes so gradually that most people only notice it in photographs, usually one taken next to someone younger. The instinct is to buy whitening strips, which help with the surface and then quietly stop helping. That is not a personal failure. It is chemistry meeting the wrong kind of stain.

Discoloration comes in layers. Surface stain from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco sits on and just within the enamel. Deeper yellowing comes from age itself, as enamel thins and the naturally yellow dentin underneath shows through. And some discoloration, like tetracycline banding or a single tooth darkened by an old injury, lives fully inside the tooth. Each layer answers to a different treatment, which is why the exam matters more than the product.

Start with the honest diagnosis

Before recommending anything, Dr. Mercado establishes what kind of discoloration you actually have. Surface stain often lifts substantially with a thorough professional cleaning and polish, which is the cheapest whitening there is. Generalized yellowing responds beautifully to professional whitening. Intrinsic discoloration, the kind inside the tooth, calls for restorative artistry rather than bleach. Plenty of patients arrive assuming they need something expensive and leave with a simpler plan, and occasionally the reverse.

The shade conversation is also about your face. The whitest available shade is rarely the most flattering one. The goal is a shade that brightens your smile while still reading as natural against your skin tone and the whites of your eyes. Whitening that announces itself has overshot.

Why the studio uses KöR for serious whitening

KöR earned its reputation on the cases other systems fail: tetracycline banding, deep age-related darkening, and teeth that shrugged off previous whitening attempts. Two details separate it. The whitening gels are refrigerated from the moment they are made until they reach your trays, preserving potency that ordinary gels lose sitting on shelves. And the trays are custom-sealed to keep saliva out, because saliva deactivates whitening gel within minutes. Sealed trays keep the chemistry working for hours.

The result is whitening measured in many shades rather than one or two, achieved on a supervised schedule that manages sensitivity instead of ignoring it. The full protocol, timeline, and the science behind it are covered in our KöR whitening guide.

When whitening is not the answer

Bleach lightens natural tooth structure. It does not lighten fillings, crowns, or veneers, and it cannot reach discoloration sealed inside a tooth. This is where a restoration-focused practice earns its keep. A single dark tooth can be renewed with internal treatment, a BioClear surface, or one carefully shaded veneer. Old yellowed bonding can be replaced to match freshly whitened neighbors. If your smile mixes natural teeth and restorations, sequencing matters: whiten first, then match the new restorations to the brighter shade.

That sequencing conversation happens at the consultation, so nothing is done twice and nothing clashes. It is also where bigger goals surface. Some patients start with color and realize they also want to address shape or alignment, which becomes a smile makeover conversation, planned in phases you control.

PATIENT QUESTIONS

Tooth Discoloration FAQ

Why did whitening strips stop working for me?

Strips address the outer layer with a low concentration of whitening agent, so they plateau quickly. Deeper discoloration lives inside the tooth structure, where drugstore products cannot reach effectively. Professional systems like KöR use higher-strength chemistry with sealed trays that keep the gel active far longer, which is how they reach staining that strips never touch. If strips plateaued for you, the staining is probably deeper than the strips can go.

What makes KöR different from other professional whitening?

Refrigerated chemistry and sealed trays. KöR gels are kept cold from production to your appointment, which preserves their potency, and the custom trays seal out saliva, which normally deactivates whitening gel within minutes. The combination keeps the gel working for hours rather than minutes, which is why KöR is the system dentists reach for on tough cases like tetracycline banding and age-darkened teeth.

Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?

Sensitivity is the most common side effect of any real whitening, but it is manageable and temporary. The KöR protocol includes desensitizing steps, and Dr. Mercado adjusts the plan for patients who start out sensitive. Little to no discomfort is a realistic expectation for most patients when the process is supervised rather than improvised at home.

One of my teeth is darker than the rest. Can that be fixed?

A single dark tooth usually has its own story, often an old injury or root canal that changed the tooth from within. Whitening the whole smile will not fix a tooth that is dark from the inside. Options include internal whitening for some root-canaled teeth, a BioClear surface, or a single veneer shaded to blend with its neighbors. This is precise, artistic work, and it is a specialty of a restoration-focused practice.

How long do whitening results last?

It depends on habits, but professional results are maintainable for years with periodic at-home touch-ups using your custom trays. Coffee and red wine will always push back. Rinsing after, and a professional cleaning on schedule, slow the return of surface stain considerably. Our journal article on maintaining whitening results long term covers the practical routine.
