Signs this page is for you
This page is for you if any of this sounds familiar:
- You had braces as a teenager and your teeth have drifted back
- One or two front teeth are turned or overlapping
- Crowding makes flossing a nightly struggle
- You angle your head in photos so the crooked side hides
- You want straighter teeth without metal brackets at your age
ALIGNMENT, DESIGNED LIKE AN ADULT DECISION
You do not have to choose between crooked and braces.
Most adults with crooked teeth have already talked themselves out of fixing them at least once. Braces felt like a teenager's project, the timeline sounded endless, and the teeth were not that crooked. So the photos keep getting taken from the good side, and the flossing keeps snagging in the same overlapped spot.
The options have quietly outgrown those objections. Clear aligners move teeth invisibly on a plan you preview digitally before committing. And for the right cases, cosmetic dentistry can deliver a straight-looking smile line in weeks rather than months. The real question is not whether your teeth can be straightened. It is which tool gets you there with the least intrusion on your life.
WAYS TO FIX IT
Treatment paths we may recommend
The right option depends on your exam. These are the treatments Dr. Mercado draws on for this concern, from most conservative to most comprehensive.
Moves the teeth
Invisalign
Clear aligners planned digitally and swapped every one to two weeks. Straightens the actual teeth, invisibly, on an adult schedule.
Fastest visual fix
Porcelain Veneers
For mild crookedness, veneers can create a straight, balanced smile line in weeks by reshaping the visible surfaces.
Most conservative
BioClear
An additive resin technique that reshapes and evens out front teeth conservatively, without the enamel reduction veneers require.
Comprehensive
Smile Makeover
Alignment first, then refinement. Combining Invisalign with whitening or veneers when one tool alone will not get you there.
Why teeth crowd, and why it slowly worsens
Teeth drift throughout life. The jaw narrows subtly with age, teeth wear against each other and migrate forward, and the pressure of the lips and tongue never stops sculpting. If you had braces years ago and skipped the retainer era, your front teeth have probably been staging a slow reunion with their old positions. This is ordinary biology, not neglect.
The trouble is that crowding compounds. Overlapped teeth are harder to clean, so plaque lingers where floss cannot follow the curve. Gum inflammation starts in exactly those spots. Meanwhile a crowded bite loads a few edges unevenly, which is where chips and flattened wear facets show up years later. Straightening is cosmetic on the surface and structural underneath.
The three honest paths
Invisalign is the true correction. A digital scan builds a 3D model of your teeth, Dr. Mercado plans the movement stage by stage, and you preview the final alignment before you begin. The aligners are nearly invisible at conversation distance, they come out for meals and coffee, and checkups are brief. As an American Academy of Clear Aligners affiliated practice, the studio treats alignment as smile design, planning where each edge should finish rather than just making teeth parallel.
Veneers answer a different question: what if the crookedness is mild and you also want to change the shade or shape? Porcelain veneers on the visible teeth can create a straight, balanced smile line in two visits. The compromise is that veneers are a restoration, not a repositioning, so they suit teeth that need refinement rather than real movement.
BioClear sits between the two. It builds out and reshapes front teeth using an additive resin technique, evening out minor rotations and unevenness with little to no enamel removal. It costs less than porcelain and preserves more tooth, in exchange for somewhat less longevity than porcelain.
For crowding that comes with real bite problems, alignment comes first and any cosmetic refinement second. Sequencing matters, and it is covered candidly at the consultation, including the option of doing nothing further once alignment alone delivers the result.
What the consultation looks like
Bring your actual goal, even if it is as simple as one turned tooth that bothers you in photos. Dr. Mercado examines your alignment, bite, and gum health, then walks through which options genuinely fit your case, with timelines and exact costs side by side. If Invisalign is on the table, a digital scan can show you a projection of your finished smile before you spend anything on treatment.
Appointments run Monday through Thursday 7AM to 4PM and Friday mornings at 1029 56th Street in East Sacramento, with free off-street parking. Aligner checkups are quick and early slots make them easy to fold into a workday. Monthly financing is available, so the decision can be about the result rather than the lump sum.
PATIENT QUESTIONS
Crooked or Crowded Teeth FAQ
Am I too old to straighten my teeth?
No. Teeth move at any age given healthy gums and bone, and adults are now a large share of alignment patients. What changes with age is the method most adults prefer. Clear aligners fit professional life in a way brackets do not, and treatment is planned digitally so you preview the end result before you begin. Gum health is checked first, since teeth should only be moved in a healthy foundation.
How long does Invisalign take for mild crowding?
Mild front-tooth crowding often resolves in a matter of months, while more involved cases run longer. The digital plan created at the start maps each stage, so you see the projected timeline for your teeth rather than an average. Wearing the aligners the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day is the single biggest factor in staying on schedule. You can read a realistic breakdown on our adult Invisalign timeline article.
Invisalign or veneers: which is right for crooked front teeth?
They solve different versions of the problem. Invisalign physically moves the teeth into alignment, which is the better answer when the crowding is more than mild, when the bite is involved, or when you want to keep your natural tooth surfaces untouched. Veneers create the appearance of straightness quickly and also let you change shade and shape at the same time, which aligners cannot do. Some plans use both, aligning first so the veneers can be thin and conservative. The consultation settles which path fits your teeth and your timeline.
Will my teeth stay straight afterward, or drift back?
Teeth have a memory, which is why retention is part of every honest alignment plan. After active treatment, a retainer holds the new positions while the bone and ligaments stabilize, then transitions to night wear. Most adults seeking treatment today are correcting drift that followed teenage braces with no retention plan, so this step gets real attention at the studio.
Does straightening teeth matter for health, or is it purely cosmetic?
Both. Crowded teeth create overlaps that floss barely reaches, which is why crowding and gum inflammation so often travel together. Misaligned bites can concentrate force on a few teeth, contributing to chips, wear, and jaw muscle tension. Straightening improves cleanability and force distribution, which is a quiet long-term investment in keeping your teeth. The confidence change is the part patients mention first, though.
