How Custom Nightguards Work
Custom nightguards are fabricated from precise impressions of your teeth and mouth. Dr. Mercado or our hygienist takes moulds, which are sent to our laboratory. The lab creates a guard customized perfectly to your teeth size, shape, and bite. Your personalized guard fits comfortably and securely, staying in place throughout the night.
The guard acts as a barrier between your upper and lower teeth, preventing direct contact during grinding. This protects both your natural teeth and any dental restorations. The soft material absorbs force from clenching, distributing pressure more evenly and reducing jaw pain and tension.
When you first receive your nightguard, Dr. Mercado ensures proper fit and comfort. Take time to adjust to wearing it, typically a few nights. Most patients find their nightguard comfortable after the adjustment period. Clean your guard daily with lukewarm water and a toothbrush. Store it in a protective case. With proper care, your nightguard lasts several years before replacement is needed.
